Pets Are Family Too

 |  General

Pets are considered part of the family, now more than ever. In America alone, over 23 million families adopted a pet during the pandemic. This is not only due to everyone wanting a little entertainment while being stuck at home, but they finally had the time to dedicate to a furry companion. Not only are they fun to have around, but fur babies are good for our mental and physical health.

For the Mind

The list of mental health benefits pets give is endless. Studies have shown that children with pets have a higher level of empathy and self-esteem and learn responsibility earlier on in life. There are a few other benefits to having a furry family member in the house:

  1. Reduce work-related stress
  2. Help manage anxiety by providing support, love, and cuddles
  3. Provide a sense of family
  4. Pets help us feel needed
  5. Boost our self-esteem and help us become more extroverted
  6. Ease social anxiety

For the Body

Pets not only keep our brains healthy but also our bodies. A few ways our furry friends help us stay healthy are….

  1. Petting your dog/cat/rabbit/turtle/bird/etc. has been proven to lower blood pressure
  2. Calm hyperactive, or upset child/ adult
  3. Promote physical activity since pets need routine exercise
  4. Provide a set schedule and routine
  5. Studies have shown owning a pet has improved cardiovascular disease survival.

Pets provide many benefits to the emotional, behavioral, and physical health of people across all demographics. Integrating a pet into the family is a long process, but the rewards are endless. Not only will it help you and your family, but you will be giving one lucky pet the loving home they all deserve.
